Straw has many more uses than just for agricultural use, as bedding and as part of a diet. In fact, straw has unlimited application possibilities:
- Building materials: Straw Chipboard and Insulation Panels.
- Fuel: Pelleting, Briquettes or Loose straw.
- Biological processes: Mushroom production, Biogas, Composting etc.
- Bedding Material: Dust-free straw bales for poultry, pet shops etc.
- Packing Material: straw-based packing materials.
- Animal Feed: Diet feed mixtures and molassed feed production.
The equipment can also be used for:
- Waste: Cutting/chopping paper, packing waste etc.

This could be turned into this:

Straw Pellets - for feed or fuel. |

Straw Briquettes - for fuel or to transport efficiently. |

Straw for building uses - chipboard, panels etc. |

Or simply straw - for feed, bedding, diets, composting, mushroom production, fuel etc. |

The Process
Loose straw can be processed according to its requirements. This could simply be for loose bedding or cut for specific livestock needs in poultry or pigs; as a diet mix which could require shredding, milling or pelleting; or for industrial uses.

Full length loose straw, a raw material, before going through any processing. |

Straw after shredding - 80% of the material is below 60 mm and 99 % is below 100 mm. |
Straw after going through the hammermill. The screen size is between 2-100 mm. |
The hammermill crushes the nodes and opens the straw tube: more absorbent and access to the minerals inside the straw. |
Removing Stones and Foreign Bodies
Baled straw that has been carted off the field contains a wide variety of foreign bodies which could cause damage to the equipment. Apart from the strings used in the baling, stones, wire and other metal objects can get picked up in the bales, as well as some of the grain. These have to be removed and there are two traps which catch them.
Baler twine can be automatically cut and removed. |
Large steel parts and pieces of wood removed in the primary trap. |
Bigger stones are separated at the primary trap and transported by auger to the secondary trap. |
At the secondary trap, all material with higher density than straw will be separated off. |
